Art is one of the best ways to tell the world what we feel inside. Some artists leave encrypted messages in their pieces of work. They still hope some people will be able to read it and find out what they wanted to say. Artists have their tools but what about the rest? I think we all have a natural need to show everyone else the way we feel, what we like and what we are afraid of. Even if some of us don’t realize it, that need often determines the way we act and the things we say. This is our way to communicate with the world around us. What are the ways of expressing ourselves and are we aware of them all?
Body language. A good psychologist can guess almost everything about another person already after a couple of minutes spent with them or sometimes even after watching a certain person for a while. The truth is the way we walk, the position we stand in, the movements of our hands – it all reveals many details about our attitude to ourselves, self confidence or the lack of it, even the attitude towards other people. We can read even more from the face – the way we look at someone or something, slight movements of our eyebrows and lips, the way we smile – it all hides much important information. Another fact is psychologists spot it all because they know they should pay attention to that. Now when we know it too, we have to realize how easy we make it for the others to read us!
Appearance. This is the way of expressing ourselves we are usually strongly aware of. We use it to show the world what we feel but also to prove everyone around we are one of a kind. Sometimes it is an original hairdo or hair color, it can be also makeup. In most cases it is the clothes we wear. It is usually some kind of style we prefer and choose for ourselves – we dress like this every time and everywhere, no matter the occasion. It can also be one particular color we love or associate with – so all the clothes we wear – from underwear through winter jacket to the pieces of our triathlon gear we train in, express ourselves.
Our behavior. It doesn’t have to be anything connected with conscious expressing ourselves, but there are actions we take and decisions we make that, even if we don’t realize it can clearly tell some things about us and about the message want to spread. It can be the choice of our education path or the place where we work – a surgeon clearly looks at the world in a different way than for example a web design expert, and different things are important for them.
There shouldn’t be place for any judgment here, I just want to say that all of us express many things with the way we are and if we want it or not, most of these things are clearly visible for the ones who know where to look. There is nothing we can do about it, but realizing that is rather fascinating than scary!
